Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a journey into the heart of Lake Kallavesi.
Before us lies one of Finland’s most beautiful lake landscapes—a waterway where history, island nature, and the unique lifestyle of Kuopio exist side by side. As our vessel departs from the harbour, we leave behind Kuopio, the vibrant heart of the Savonia region.
The city was founded on the shores of Lake Kallavesi in the 18th century, and water has always been essential to life here. The lake brought merchants, fishermen, and travellers to the area, and even today Kallavesi continues to shape the rhythm of the city.

Rönö and Väinölänniemi
Our first landmark is Rönö, one of Kuopio’s best-known islands. Rönö is a place where historic villa culture meets modern residential living. In the past, the island was a summer retreat where wealthy local families built elegant villas sheltered by its lush shores.
Next, we pass Väinölänniemi, a park and sports area located close to Kuopio city centre. Surrounded by Lake Kallavesi, Väinölänniemi is one of the city’s oldest and most beloved urban parks. It serves as an important venue for recreation, sports, and events, enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike.
Saaristokaupunki – The Archipelago District
As we continue, the scenery gradually becomes more modern as we enter the waters surrounding Saaristokaupunki, the Archipelago District.
Saaristokaupunki is one of Finland’s most distinctive residential areas—a district built around bridges, islands, and water. Here, the lake is not merely a backdrop but an integral part of everyday life. For many families, a boat is as practical a means of transport as a car.
The area has been developed with great respect for its natural surroundings, which is why forests, shorelines, and waterscapes remain a prominent feature of the environment. The picturesque Saaristokatu, with its series of bridges, connects the district to the city centre. The distance from Kuopio Market Square to the northern parts of Saaristokaupunki is approximately four kilometres.
The district gained nationwide recognition as the host of Finland’s Housing Fair in 2010. Today, around 16,000 residents live in this unique area, which is spread across four peninsulas.
Lake Kallavesi
As our journey continues toward the open waters, the vast expanse of Lake Kallavesi unfolds around us. The lake forms part of the extensive Iso-Kalla water system and is renowned for its clear waters, countless islands, and landscapes that transform beautifully with the changing seasons.
For centuries, Kallavesi has served the people of Savonia as a source of food, a transportation route, and a place of relaxation. The vendace, a small freshwater whitefish, is the lake’s most famous catch. Many locals still remember summer evenings when fishing nets were set on the water as the sun disappeared behind the forested horizon.
Kallavesi, the largest lake in North Savo, lies almost entirely within the municipality of Kuopio. Covering an area of approximately 470 square kilometres, it is Finland’s tenth-largest lake. Together with the neighbouring lakes Suvasvesi, Juurusvesi, Riistavesi, and Muuruvesi, it forms the Iso-Kalla basin, which covers around 900 square kilometres and ranks as Finland’s fifth-largest inland water basin.
Despite its size, Kallavesi is relatively shallow, with an average depth of only about 8.9 metres. Its deepest point, approximately 75 metres, is located in the eastern part of Central Kallavesi.
Vaajasalo Island and Alahovi Winery
Ahead lies Vaajasalo, a 973-hectare island and one of the largest islands in Lake Kallavesi. Fewer than one hundred people live on the island. Vaajasalo is connected to the mainland by a ferry service, and during winter an ice road provides access across the frozen lake.
The large building visible on the island’s highest point was once a sanatorium for women suffering from epilepsy. The institution began operating in 1898, but today the building stands abandoned.
Our destination on the island is Alahovi Winery, where Finland’s first farm winery shop opened in 1995. Since then, the estate has produced high-quality berry wines, liqueurs, and ciders, while also developing into a unique and popular tourist attraction.
We hope you enjoy the cruise and the unforgettable scenery of Lake Kallavesi. Thank you for joining us on this journey through one of Finland’s most remarkable lake regions.
